About Our Expressions of Worship |
|
|
We fully recognize that every church will have its own distinct style and expression of praise and worship. It is essential, however, that our manner follow Scriptural patterns. Why do we sing with all our hearts? "Sing aloud to God our strength, make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob." PSALM 81:1,2 "Sing out the honour of His name, make His praise glorious." PSALM 66:2 "Oh bless our God, you people! And make the voice of His praise be heard." PSALM 66:8 Why do we clap our hands? "Oh clap your hands all ye people! Shout to God with a voice of triumph." PSALM 47:1 Why do we lift our hands? "Thus will I bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in Your name." PSALM 63:4 "Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord." PSALM 143:2 "I desire that men pray everywhere lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting." 1 TIMOTHY 2:8 Why do we sing choruses as well as hymns? "Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." EPHESIANS 5:19 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." COLOSSIANS 3:16 Why do we have spontaneous words from the Lord? "Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy." 1 CORINTHIANS 14:1 "For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged." 1 CORINTHIANS 14:31 "Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues." 1 CORINTHIANS 14:39 Why do we anoint with oil and pray for the sick? "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up…" JAMES 5:14, 15 Why do we speak in other tongues? "And these signs will follow those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues." MARK 16:17 "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." ACTS 2:4 "For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God…He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…" 1 CORINTHIANS 14:2,4 |
